I can really empathize with people being upset over gentrification (revitalization)...but in Detroit...of all places? I would feel like anything to bring people in would be met with open arms.

I mean I realize it’s a complex issue, but Detroit is pretty well known for its poverty and crime. It sad to see improvements brushed off as “ugh...wypipo”.

First of all no, I can’t tell from the first two sentences what kind of article it’s going to be because the one mildly political comment has nothing to do with the title or picture of the article. I would assume it is still largely an article about food. Not that the term ‘gentrification’ is political, and ‘resegregation’ while pointed may not be terribly inaccurate?

Second of all, how can you pretend to have any sembla nce of an understanding of what the article is about if you didn’t read it at all yourself. Like damn, didn’t your mom ever teach you ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’?

I ‘m with ya on inflammatory articles (their bad articles breathe life into the Clashtalk Kinja) but I’m not sure why political leanings are relevant? Inflammatory can go both ways. I used to read news on the right and some sources really aren’t any better than Gawker.

I understand it. Madame DeLorean lives in a S outh Chicago neighbourhood that used to be majority POC. The crime rates were no t bad (crime rates in Chicago can vastly differ between blocks), the housing was “nice” but not upscale, and so on. Then developers started realizing the area’s potential for upscale housing, businesses, and turning it into a place to attract more wealthy people . Now the neighbourhood is filling with white hipsters and with them is coming much more expensive rent. The POC are moving out of their own community because things are getting too expensive. Chicago’s neighbourhoods are already segregated, and the gentrification of them segregates them again.

I suspect Detroit was segregated to begin with because of the growth pattern.

Any US city that grew before the civil rights movement is probably heavily segregated because of redlining.

When detroit began loosing population though, One could assume that those with the highest mobility capabilities were mostly white people, so maybe Detroit became more homogeneous because of the white people that left. Again, I wouldn’t know the statistical information.

About gentrification. I think that blaming it for segregated cities is a strech. It’s undeniably a factor in cases of illegal rent discrimination. But, its also undeniable that gentrification and realestate speculation hits poor people the most, regardless of their skin color (even if skin color plays a role in socioeconomic disadvantages at times). Just for context, about a third of children living in poverty are white. Perhaps that’s little keeping in mind other demographics, but it’s still a significant number, and one that would invalidate gentrification as a source of resegregation.

In order to avoid excessive gentrification, one could start by raising the capital gains tax, then set up better rent control schemes, terminate predatory lending, and limiting the amount of “rental” apartments in a complex. (Americans are, in bigger numbers, NOT owning their homes, and that plays a big role)

To avoid segregation in terms of race, maybe getting rid of HOA’s, relaxing some of the rules for social housing projects , increasing school busing schemes, and probably increasing community outreach.

Those are my suggestions based on what I know from the developing firm and our contact with the Mexico City government and our Borough leadership .

The best example of a Jalopnik/Jezebel cross post was about a MB C230 and the woman driving it to pick up her welfare checks. It was a hard luck story about losing her job/house and choosing to keep the car as it was paid off and relatively reliable.

I’ll dig it up but the comment basically went:

Jezebel: She should/shouldn’t have to sell her nice car just because she is on welfare.

Its a bit more complicated from that. Back in the 80s any abandoned homes were torn down, leaving once filled blocks with only a handful of residences left. This was triage to deal with the blight. Then o ver the last 10 years the ci ty has been buying up these lone rem ai ning homes, and removing the streets to consoli date neighborhoods. This has been called rightsizing or downsizing . It really is necessary for the long term good of the city.

There was another article in The economist, it is one thing if a neighbor hood gntrifies and the residents benefit by selling at higher real estate prices, but in t he case of detroit people are being forced to without the full benefit of the rising market prices.
